Union Shop is democratic, standard, and practical.

Union shop (universal membership) is the fundamental source of our democratic union power

  • We need leverage, resources, and organized support to enforce our contract

  • Union shop ensures everyone pays their fair share as a condition of employment

  • Universal membership ensures that every grad worker has a say/vote in the decisions that will impact their working conditions

  • All other unions on Cornell’s campus are union shops --> it's common/standard

    • Union shop is standard for grad shops (MIT, Northwestern, UChicago, Stanford, JHU, USC, etc)

    • Union shops have stronger contracts, higher wages, and better workplace protections

  • Union shop is practical

    • Union shop creates a lasting union structure and stable membership

    • This gives us the security and longevity to fight for a stronger second contract
